Mothers leading grassroots effort for medical marijuana

Moms are leading the grassroots effort for medical marijuana in Florida.

Moms like Renee Petro. “It may not be perfect, but it’s better than what we have right now. How do I know? Because I have tried them all.”

Petro’s 13-year-old son, Branden, has a form of epilepsy. He is on a cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs. Branden can have a seizure up to eight times a day. He had one while 10News WTSP was filming. Renee asked us to keep recording.

“This is his life every day on all of those pharmaceuticals and he still seizes every day. Enough is enough.”

For over two minutes, Branden had a seizure. His mother, helpless but to watch, offer encouragement and hold his hand.

Any seizure could take his life.

Petro and some doctors believe cannabis can help and even cure diseases like epilepsy.

“We need to be able to not only utilize it in the proper way, but also to study it.  We need research,” Petro said.

For the second time, Florida voters will decide the medical marijuana issue in November, voting on a constitutional amendment.

“Your vote means my sons life,” Petro said.  “From a mother to all of the voters, please do it for those who are suffering, do it for Branden.  He deserves it.”
