Spreading Awareness and Healing Lives at the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida

One of the most important services provided by EFOF is individualized case management or tailored health plans for patients and their families. Those affected by epilepsy also have the choice to join a support group; there are a variety of group meetings on a monthly basis for adults and youth as well as parents of children living with epilepsy. EFOF local offices have a wide range of textual and audiovisual resources on the disease in English, Spanish, and Creole.

Director of Marketing and Legal Affairs Ilana Bitton says that one of the pillars of EFOF’s mission is spreading awareness and providing educational resources to the community. Public awareness about the disease can help in early diagnosis and treatment. Epilepsy is a neurological condition, which causes recurring seizures and can develop at any age; one in twenty six people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime.

However, Bitton points out, seizures can also occur after a traumatic injury to the brain. As a result, the Foundation focuses a great deal of attention on brain injury prevention and education and emphasizes the importance of wearing protective gear.

Each year the EFOF sponsors children from across the state to participate in “Epilepsy Week” at Camp Boggy Creek where they can spend time with others who are just like them and share their life experiences. The camp has a state-of-the-art medical facility as well as a team of neurologists, doctors and nurses on staff. Bitton adds that there are a multitude of activities including arts and crafts, theater, horseback riding, archery, rock climbing, zip lining, pool activities, and much more.

One of the popular EFOF signature events is “Let’s Talk About It,” which commemorates November Epilepsy Awareness Month and encourages supporters to host events in their local communities to help spread knowledge and awareness. “We also host our annual “Walk the Talk for Epilepsy” and just hosted nine walks this past March and April across different cities in Florida with hundreds of participants attending each,” Bitton remarks. Prevention and education are crucial goals for EFOF, which provides presentations throughout schools, hospitals, day care centers, police stations, and more.
